Pilates is a workout routine developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates that encourages an individual to use their mind to control core muscles. Most often conducted on a Pilates mat and supervised by a certified Pilates instructor, participants are taken through a range of callisthenic movements designed to improve one’s flexibility, muscle endurance and strength. Originally, Pilates exercises were used to treat injured dancers, but it has become popular with many people looking to increase flexibility and strength.
