Aqua Aerobics
Transporting traditional Aerobic exercise into a shallow water environment (typically a swimming pool), Aqua Aerobics offers many advantages over land training, including the building of greater strength through water resistance, and a minimizing of potential muscular injuries.
History: Aqua or Water Aerobics were derived from traditional Aerobics, which were exercises initially created by San Antonio Air Force Doctor Kenneth Cooper in the 1960's. The popularity of Aerobic exercise for heart health and losing weight skyrocketed in the 1980's, and many variations, including Aqua Aerobics, soon gained favor, as well. Because Aerobics are still a proven and highly respected means of staying in shape, Aqua Aerobics is likely to remain a popular workout form for many years to come, especially considering the added comfort, cooling properties, and extra resistance of water. Plus, both swimmers and non-swimmers can participate.
